Be My Next Inspiration
London’s finest young poets launch creative challenge - Be My Next Inspiration
Momtaza Mehri – Caleb Femi – James Massiah – Zia Ahmed – Bridget Minamore – Ella Frears – Rakaya Esime Fetuga
The Be My Next Inspiration announcement / block party last night managed to bring a London street to a standstill – a first for poetry.
Seven of London’s finest young poets performed to guests from the creative industries and beyond. Those guests were challenged by the poets’ words to create a new piece of work in any medium, whether an artwork, a poster, a t-shirt, a blog post…
The new initiative, between Spread The Word and creative agency BUREAU, aims to help young people new to poetry to understand the excitement and opportunities that words can offer them. More than this, it is a powerful statement showing that young people are being listened to.
Be My Next Inspiration recognises poetry as a craft that can inspire us all. It offers us a chance to reflect on the city of today; it creates opportunities for unheard voices to be listened to; and it allows us to notice what matters most, through the words of young Londoners.
To help get the ball rolling on this important initiative, 18 trustees from the world of creative, music, art, poetry and photography have signed up to be the first to create, share and help spread the word.
The Trustees: Bafic / Bridget Minamore / Caleb Femi / Dan Joyce / Ella Frears / Frank Laws / Harris Elliot / Tom Skinner / James Massiah / Momtaza Mehri / Su & Steve at Sane Communications / Stevie Gee / Sunil Pawar / Suzannah Pettigrew / Tim & Barry /
The poets performing on the night were: Momtaza Mehri, the Young People’s Laureate for London; her predecessor, Caleb Femi; James Massiah, a poet and DJ from South London; Zia Ahmed, former Roundhouse Slam winner; writer, poet and journalist Bridget Minamore; the poet and visual artist Ella Frears; and Young People’s Laureate for London Poetry Award winner (18-25) Rakaya Esime Fetuga.
The final works, inspired by the poems, will be unveiled on Thursday 27 September.
This creative challenge is an open submission for collaborators that wish to be involved – see bemynextinspiration.co.uk for details.
